Review: Cafe Loisl

+++ Update Jan 2015: Cafe Loisl has closed its doors +++

I’ve got a long list of places that I’ve read about and that I plan to visit, and so far I’ve only managed to go to a few of them. One of them is Café Loisl in Sheung Wan (for example on Hong Kong a la mode and on alampy’s space). It is tucked away and you do have to climb a few steps to find it (about midway up the Pound Lane staircase between Hollywood Road and Hospital Road) but it is worth the climb.

As the name implies, it’s a coffee house resembling a typical Viennese one – it just happens to be in Hong Kong. There are a few chairs and tables outdoor as well as indoor, a small bar area and a tiny little kitchen. The dishes on the menu are small light fares for lunch as well as cakes and pastries – on the day I visited they had poppy seed cake, carrot cake, cheese cake and apple strudel.

Of course, I had to try the famous Viennese apple strudel and so I sat down and ordered a slice (48 HKD), together with an Americano coffee (30 HKD). The apple strudel arrived warm, with a dollop of cream (I would have preferred custard sauce, but we’re in Hong Kong, not Vienna) and it tasted good.

Overall the taste was a little sour, probably because of the type of apples used, but I liked it. The texture of the strudel was perfect, the dough had the right consistency and was a little chewy inside, but crispy on top. There were lots of nuts in the strudel, but unfortunately not enough raisins and there should have been more fruit to balance the dense texture of the nuts. Still, that’s probably the best apple strudel I had in Hong Kong to date, and I am sure I’ll be back some time soon to try the other cakes.
