While exploring the Lou Kau Mansion we came across a lady in traditional Miao outfit, making and selling paper cuts.
Miao people are a minority group from the southwest in China. They mostly live in large mountain area with poor geological conditions and closed environment, and have kept many special living customs and cultural heritage. They use paper-cuts in embroidery and their motifs often include flowers and animals, at least that’s what the lady told me.
She used small scissor and very thin paper in her artwork. When she was cutting, she actually cut several sheets of paper at the same time.
The finished paper cuts were available for sale. They looked very beautiful.
