Review: Taco Chaca

It was pure coincidence that I noticed Taco Chaca on the streets of Sai Ying Pun. I was actually hungry and looking for a quick bite, so I walked inside this tiny place on Second Street.

It was a late afternoon so not many people were inside – but funnily enough as soon as I sat down to eat, the place became popular and six or seven people arrived to order a meal. So I thought to myself, it must be a good place if it is popular at 3pm on a Saturday!

Menus are non-existent; food is chosen from the big board on the wall, then ordered and paid for directly at the till. The board featured all the typical Mexican dishes: tacos, burritos, nachos or quesadillas.

I decided to try a burrito filled with pulled pork. The carnitas burrito is filled with lots of meat, combined with Mexican rice, refried beans and cheese and comes with a side of salsa. The portion was huge and very tasty. Nice meat, spicy sauce and the filling was not too dense or too loose. Just right.

Taco Chaca is a casual place to get a quick bite to eat or to grab take out. It’s a small place where food is served on paper plates and you probably won’t linger around for a long period of time. But this does not matter – the only objective of Taco Chaca is to serve delectable Mexican dishes to the Hong Kong public. And it is doing that admirably well.

Will I go there again? Yes, this beats the Mexican food we had at Heirloom by a mile, even if I’ve not had any tacos at Taco Chaca yet I’m convinced this is a better place. The prices are fair, the portions big and the food is very tasty.
