Review: Emack & Bolio’s

Despite the cold temperatures in January and February, I had to venture out to try this ‘new’ ice cream place people were talking about. Well, it has been open for some months now (since summer 2015), but I don’t explore Central that much anymore – so for me it was still new.

Emack & Bolio’s sits right underneath the escalator, so it is in a prime spot for people spotting – basically people going up the escalator see people underneath enjoying their ice cream. That should make them turn around and walk downhill, to grab their cone too!

And yes, the cone is something special. Apparently Emack & Bolio’s invented the flavoured cone in 1980 and have been improving on the concept ever since. The cones are big from the start, but then they add Oreos, Rice Krispies, Fruit Loops or chocolate to the outside of the cone, making it HUGE. No wonder, they call them ‘Outrageous Cones’ themselves.

The ice cream comes in lots of different flavours (all made from natural ingredients) – I’d say that there are some interesting flavours that you will not find elsewhere. When I went, I tried (1) Almond Coconut Bar, which includes chocolate flakes (2) Salted Caramel Chocolate Pretzel and (3) Peach. So yes, peach is not something unusual, but the other two flavours were something I had not tried before.

Emack & Bolio’s is originally from Boston and the company recently opened stores in Bangkok, United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong. I wondered where the name came from, and a quick Internet search told me the following: “The store was named after two homeless men for whom Robert Rook (the founder) did pro bono work, who asked that the ice cream shop be named after them”.

They don’t only offer ice cream but also frozen yogurt, milkshakes, smoothies and chocolates that are handmade and shipped from the USA. But of course, every one comes to try their funky flavours and big ice cream cones.

Would I go there again? Maybe. I loved the almond coconut bar flavour, that’s for sure. But the price tag is quite hefty: it’s HK$43 for one scoop, HK$63 for two and HK$83 for three scoops – so it is definitely not cheap. Add to that the price of an ‘outrageous’ cone. So all in all, quite a pricey ice cream shop, but then maybe one for special occasions?!
