Review: Frites

I always like the al fresco spaces in the Causeway Centre in Wan Chai. It is one of the few places where you can sit outside and there is actually plenty of space and no car traffic. It is a great area for little ones to roam around, all they need to watch out for are pedestrians.

So when we decided to go for a late lunch or early dinner around that area, we decided to give Frites a try – after we’ve already been to Chez Patrick Deli and had a good time there.

It was a quiet Saturday afternoon, and it was raining – so no one was sitting outside except the staff. That was ok, we grabbed another table and Lina had plenty of room to play along the cushioned benches and also with the place mats on the tables.

We decided to order two mains, one fish and chips and the other was the steak. Both dishes arrived about 10 mins after ordering, which seemed promising, so at least some of the ingredients should be fresh.

Well, the salad was. But apart from that my fish and my chips seemed double-fried, so they had been prepared before and were just quickly assembled again. I do like my chips crispy, but they were too crispy and oily for my taste.

The fish itself was tasteless – the meat was firm, and the crust very crispy – but nothing special. In fact, Lina didn’t even like to try the fish and only had two chips, which shows that she was not impressed. While the portion size was big, the dish just lacked freshness and seasoning.

Patrick’s steak sat at the other end of the scale – it was smothered in salt and pepper. It was too much. He had to have two drinks to wash it all down. The steak was decent – but again, his chips were too crispy and also double-fried.

In the end, an average meal. And what annoys me is that it was two mains and three soft drinks for 720 HKD including service charge. That’s way too much, even if we had steak (and it is one of the expensive dishes on the menu) – I know this is Hong Kong, but I am not impressed. We will try something else next time, there are plenty more options around Wan Chai.
