Another stroller-friendly walk runs from Shau Kei Wan to Quarry Bay. We combined it with a visit to the Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence, which is always a great spot on a sunny day.
This quirky museum is built on the site of the old Lei Yue Mun Fort, up on a hill. Inside the redoubt building are galleries with artefacts from key moments of Hong Kong’s history, such as the Opium War and World War II. However, what makes this museum truly worth a visit is the outdoor historical trail which takes you right down to the shoreline with stunning views of the East side of Victoria Harbour.
On leaving the museum, we turned right and followed the Tung Hei Road for about ten minutes, passing the wholesale fish market, to reach the Tam Kung Temple on the right.
Upon leaving the temple, we took the side entrance to the Aldrich Bay Promenade and walked alongside the Shau Kei Wan Typhoon Shelter. We saw lots of sampans, small and large fishing boats and also a few junks ‘parked’ there.
Once we reached the end of the promenade, we walked past the big Grand Promenade residential complex, turned right and continued along the Sai Wan Ho Harbour Park. Next to this park are lots of Western and Chinese restaurants, it is a popular area to eat out – and next time I’m here I’ll make sure to be hungry so we can try one or two of the places!
We continued walking along the Sai Wan Ho Harbour Park and entered the East end of the Quarry Bay Park. Lots of people were out jogging, walking or doing different exercises.
This part of the walk took us past the Fireboat Alexander Grantham, which is a great place to visit – with and without kids!
The final part of the walk took us along a section that is for dog lovers – this is one of the few areas where you can walk your dog (I don’t understand why you are not allowed to walk your dog along the waterfront in Shau Kei Wan for instance – as long as it is on a leash and you clean up after it, I would not mind). Anyway, this part was funny to walk through – so many dogs and so much excitement!
The whole walk from the Shau Kei Wan Promenade to the Quarry Bay Promenade where you can walk your dogs is about 3km. It is completely flat and in areas where it is not, you’ll find a ramp. Combined with the temple/museum visit and maybe lunch/dinner at one of the restaurants at Sai Wan Ho Harbour Park it makes for a great day out in the East of Hong Kong Island.

I like this section of Hong Kong quite a bit. I hope that Shau Kei Wan doesn’t gentrify too much — it’s already changed quite a bit in the past few years.
BTW, if you have yet to check out the Hong Kong Film Archive in Sai Wan Ho, would like to recommend that you do. Many really interesting films get shown there — and yes, quite a number of the Hong Kong films do get shown with English subtitles. :)

I’ve done this walk in the opposite direction. I think we got as far as Aldrich bay before turning back. It’s a nice easy walk with lovely views of the harbour and it’s pretty accessible from a lot of places in Hong Kong too.
