Hiking: Ma On Shan to Sai Kung

On Sunday I went for an easy sunset hike from Ma On Shan to Sai Kung – easy means that it is not too steep or too fast, but it still is a 3 hour hike with some incline.

We started at Heng On MTR Station (Ma On Shan Line) and walked through the estate, over the motor way and then along the bushes until we reached the Ma On Shan Country Trail.

This took us to the Ma On Shan BBQ site, where we had a long break – some of our fellow hikers were already exhausted by then, as it was a hot day. So we waited for a while, replenished our water supplies and then made our way slowly up to Ngong Ping (don’t confuse it with the one on Lantau, this one is different).

That was the hardest part. From there on it was easy, just 10 minutes a long the ridge to the place where usually the paragliders start – but there were none to be seen on Sunday.

So we just enjoyed the view over Sai Kung and Hebe Haven.

Shortly before the sun set (but it had already disappeared) some of us decide to walk back to Heng On MTR, while I continued with the other half of the group to Sai Kung, which was the shorter but steeper descent. If you are interested in joining a similar hike, come and join our MeetUp group!

  1. Hey mate,
You left out the important detail that it is a 5.5 km walk along a road full of cars spewing exhaust in your face before you can reach the Ma On Shan Country Park sign. Kind of a major omission don’t you think. If you are taking this walk people, seriously consider taking a taxi to Ma On Shan Country Park to start your hike.
