After pandas, there are now elephants in town… not as many as there were during the 1,600 papier-mache pandas’ visit, but still plenty!
I visited the herd at Pacific Place last weekend – they will stay there, as well as in Cityplaza and Citygate Outlets until September 9, so you still have a few days to see them – and it was a fun experience. I had seen the elephants in London before, and I actually owe one of the smaller ones (fish & chips by Thammakit Thamboon) so I was eager to see the Hong Kong versions.
I was not disappointed – the Hong Kong elephants are beautiful, with some clever designs. They range from a map of the city on the back of “Pearl of the Orient” by Diana Francis…
… to Hong Kong’s favourite dishes on the back of “Yum-Ephant”, also by Diana Francis, including the little chicken eggs…
… some classic Chinese good luck design (coins and gold colour are always auspicious) on Lucky Coin
by Santi Takaew …
… plus a seating elephant with black design. Maybe he resembles Hong Kong at night?
Then there is one that looks almost like Delft China to me – but it is called Mirage by Yeung Hok Tak. And of course, it is meant to represent a Ceramic Vase – which is just as fragile, precious and elegant like an elephant.
… and some very fancy ones. This one, Butterfly by SCAD (Kevin Lee), glows in the dark…
… and the final one, Angel by Yu Jordy Fu, is very elegant, hiding in lots of elephant cutouts! According to the artist, ‘the sculpture displays over a thousand elephants walking and playing in the cloud, representing an idea world of freedom and wellbeing for all animals in the world.’
Here is an overview of all the elephants that can be seen at this year’s Elephant Parade in Hong Kong.
So envious! Missed the pandas and also the elephants (they were in Singapore, but I was abroad then)! Looks fun. Thanks for sharing.
