I supported the City of Darkness Book

Finally, the big day has arrived – the Kickstarter project about the Kowloon Walled City came to fruition.

20 years after its demolition photographers Greg Girard and Ian Lambot published a new edition of their book “City of Darkness,” the most comprehensive publication on the place to date.

The reprint marks the 20th anniversary of the City’s demolition – and the new edition is fantastic! It comes with lots of new images and several stories have been updated.

I only received it two days ago, and hadn’t had much time to look through it, but so far it is really interesting… and it lists me as one of the Kickstarter supporters on the final pages of the book! Hooray :)

Even my cat Sam is intrigued by it and keeps a close eye on the book (maybe it’s the smell of the new book that appeals to him more than the images? I don’t know).

You can buy your own copy here – and it will go on sale in bookshops in Hong Kong and in the UK soon.

  1. I stumbled on the original book on Amazon 2 days ago, but the $299 price kinda put me off…
I didn’t know a revised version was coming out, I am getting one!

    1. I’ve not had a chance to see the old version, but the new one is really detailed and with lots of information – I’m happy I bought it, I’ll be busy reading it over the next couple of weekends!

  2. I’ve always been fascinated by this place. Such a rich history (and infamy). In a way it’s a shame it’s no longer there, but I guess it’s for the better. It’s great that books like this one are around to document this important former landmark. I’ll be sure to check it out – thanks for the tip!

    1. You are welcome Peter! I’m always surprised how little information is available online about this place, most of the times I see the same picture used all over! So I’m really happy that the revised book came out. It is really detailed!
