Review: OVO Cafe

Now that I know where the Old Wan Chai Market is, I explored the cafe that sits now in the renovated building. It is called OVO Cafe and it sits in a green garden! The cafe shares the location with a flower shop, so no wonder there are orchids, succulents and other plants dotted around the cafe. It is a lovely atmosphere, it feels like sitting in a green house – and so airy and fresh, it is really great.

OVO Cafe serves different salads, soups, pasta and other savoury dishes. The lunch set for 58 HKD includes one main and either a soup of the day, a side salad or a hot drink. I opted for the daily salad and soup combination.

The soup of the day was mushroom soup – but without cream. It came with some rocket on top. It was very tasty, lots of mushrooms had been used to flavour the soup. Plus it was piping hot and a good portion.

The salad of the day was green apples, pecan nuts and raisins – a refreshing combination. The portion size was good too, lots of nuts and raisins were mixed in the salad. Maybe a little side of bread would have been nice, but otherwise this was the perfect soup and salad lunch.

The cafe was busy at 1.30pm when we arrived, but after 2.30pm it was very quiet – I ordered a decaf coffee which was strong and good, but I managed to stay away from the cakes. They looked very nice, but also very creamy. I am not a fan of cream, so hence no cake for me! But I am sure they are nice too – maybe I can try a little bite next time.

Talking about next time… will I go back? Yes of course, such a fantastic find. I love the interior of the cafe, the lunch deal is very good and I always enjoy eating healthy vegetables… too often lunch is meat and rice/noodles, so salad is a great alternative. The only negative is that there is a long waiting time at lunch and that it’s self-service (and you have to remember to pick up the cutlery).
